Frequently Asked Questions
What is Variable Attention Stimulus Trait, or VAST?
Variable Attention Stimulus Trait, or VAST is a term introduced by Drs. Hallowell and Ratey in their book ADHD 2.0. It describes people with ‘ADHD’ traits, even if they do not meet the full criteria for an ADHD diagnosis.
VAST is not about a deficit of attention, it is about a variability of attention. It’s a more accurate term than ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), which is misleading as it suggests a deficit of attention, which is not the case. People with VAST can focus intensely on what interests them.
People with VAST include Pulitzer prize winners, Nobel prize winners, billionaires, doctors, lawyers, actors, trendsetters, entrepreneurs, inventors, and many others. It’s estimated that about 10% of the population has Variable Attention Stimulus Trait.
VAST is also seen as a symptom of the behavioural conditioning our technology-driven and stimulated culture has on us. Our environment has an increased pace where we are more connected, engaged, and distracted, requiring our brains to process more than ever before.
In summary, VAST is a new way to understand and describe the unique wiring of the brain that leads to creative thinking, adventurousness, courage, integrity, perseverance, and a desire to make a change. It’s a trait, not a disorder.
What is ADHD coaching?
ADHD coaching is a specialised form of coaching designed to help individuals of groups with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) improve their executive functioning skills, develop effective strategies to manage their symptoms, and achieve their personal and professional goals.
How can ADHD coaching help me?
ADHD coaching can help you by providing personalised support, accountability, and guidance to better navigate the challenges of living with ADHD. A coach can work with you to identify your strengths and weaknesses, set realistic goals, develop effective time management and organisational strategies, improve focus and concentration, and enhance your overall quality of life.
Who can benefit from ADHD coaching?
ADHD coaching can benefit individuals of all ages who have been diagnosed with ADHD or suspect they may have ADHD. Whether you are a student struggling with academics, a professional looking to excel in your career, or someone who wants to improve your relationships and overall well-being, ADHD coaching can provide you with the tools and strategies you need to thrive.
How is ADHD coaching different from therapy?
While therapy focuses on addressing past issues, emotions, and mental health concerns, ADHD coaching is future-oriented and action-driven. Coaches partner with clients to set specific goals, develop practical strategies, and take proactive steps to achieve desired outcomes. ADHD coaching does not provide diagnosis or treatment for mental health conditions; it is complementary to therapy and other forms of professional support.
What can I expect in an ADHD coaching session?
In an ADHD coaching session, you can expect your coach to actively listen to your concerns, help you identify your strengths and challenges, set achievable goals, generate solutions to overcome obstacles, provide personalised tools and strategies, offer ongoing support and accountability, and celebrate your progress and successes. Sessions are typically conducted in a structured and supportive manner, either in person, over the phone, or via video conferencing.
How long does ADHD coaching last?
The duration of ADHD coaching can vary depending on your individual needs, goals, and progress. Some clients may benefit from short-term coaching to address specific challenges or transitions, while others may choose to engage in long-term coaching to make sustained changes and improvements in various areas of their life. A typical coaching engagement may range from a few months to a year or more, with sessions scheduled weekly or bi-weekly.
